Subnautica is a first-person survival game that invites you to explore the underwater world of an alien planet called 4546B after the crash of a spaceship called Aurora. The main objective of the game is to explore the marine environment, gather resources, craft various tools and vehicles, and survive in a hostile environment.
The game offers a vast and diverse ocean world, from colorful shallow waters to dark and dangerous depths. You must utilize a crafting system that allows you to create essential tools such as scanners, diving gear, and vehicles like the Seamoth and Cyclops. As you survive, you need to monitor your oxygen levels, food and water intake, and avoid attacks from aggressive sea creatures.
Unlike other survival games, Subnautica doesn't emphasize combat. You aren't given lethal weapons, but instead are encouraged to use strategy, careful preparation, and non-lethal equipment to face various threats. Using a scanner, you can also study your surroundings and acquire blueprints to expand your exploration capabilities.
Story
The story in Subnautica isn't told explicitly through cutscenes, but rather unfolds slowly through exploration, the discovery of digital logs (PDAs), and archaeological remains from the alien civilization that once inhabited the planet. We discover that the planet was once an experimentation site for an advanced alien race searching for a cure for a deadly plague.
As the sole survivor of the Aurora spaceship crash, we slowly piece together the mystery surrounding the disease infecting life on the planet, the alien technology left behind, and why the planet's defense system shoots down all approaching craft. The story is packed with mystery and emotion, culminating in a mission to create a vaccine, disable the defense system, and return to Earth.
