Have you ever imagined playing a game where you're not a hero, not a soldier, not even human? In Maneater, you play as a ferocious shark terrorizing the oceans and coastlines. It sounds absurd, but that's precisely the game's main appeal.
Developed by Tripwire Interactive, Maneater attempts to offer an open-world action RPG experience with a completely different perspective. Instead of saving the world, your goal is simple: survive, grow, and exact revenge.
Being a Shark Is Actually Fun
From the very beginning of gameplay, Maneater immediately throws players into the vast ocean. You start as a weak baby shark and must continuously hunt fish, sea animals, and even humans to survive. The more prey you devour, the faster your shark evolves.
The main gameplay revolves around ocean exploration and fast-paced combat. You can leap out of the water to attack people on the docks, drag fishermen from their boats, or engage in fierce battles with other predators like crocodiles and large sharks. An upgrade system allows your shark to evolve into increasingly brutal creatures, with abilities ranging from electric teeth and steel skin to tail attacks capable of destroying small boats.
The thrill of being an apex predator is exhilarating, especially when humans start to panic and send armed hunters after us. Unfortunately, after a few hours of play, this gameplay pattern starts to feel repetitive. While still fun, it doesn't offer much variety and tends to rely on the same mechanics from start to finish.
