You must gather clues to help Baichuan understand his obscure past. However, the story's time-shifting design can be a bit confusing at first, and some dialogue choices don't have an immediately obvious outcome, adding an element of challenge to your decisions.
Story
The game's story focuses on Baichuan's journey to understand his past and confront the regrets that haunt him. Set in Shanghai in 2003, Baichuan finds himself trapped in a strange and unfamiliar reality, as if in a parallel world. A talking black cat accompanies Baichuan as he attempts to solve the puzzle of his memories and the anomalies surrounding him. This profound story delves into human emotions, particularly those of hope and regret, but the plot, which moves between time and place, can feel cluttered, making it difficult to follow in just one playthrough.
Graphics
Visually, Shanghai Summer captivates with its interactive, anime-style graphics. The details of Shanghai's urban environments are beautifully rendered, and every corner feels alive. Despite being developed by a Chinese studio, the character art style retains a subtle and appealing Japanese anime feel. Character animations are fluid, making for a smoother gameplay experience. The schoolbook-like interface lends a nostalgic feel, although the text placement can feel a bit cluttered at times.
Level Design
Shanghai Summer's level design is quite simple, with a linear pattern that follows the storyline. We'll adventure through various locations in Shanghai in a sidescrolling mode, interacting with characters and objects along the way. While not complex, the time anomalies and world shifts that Baichuan experiences add to the uniqueness of navigating the parallel world he finds himself in.
